PETERSON, Oscar (1925 – 23 Aralık 2007, Toronto)

Kanadalı müzikçi. Önde gelen caz piyanistlerindendir.

Oscar Emanuel Peterson 15 Ağustos 1925’te Montreal’de doğdu. Bir süre Kanadalı bir toplulukla çalıştıktan sonra 1949’da ABD’ye gitti. Aynı yıl Jazz at the Philharmonic adlı topluluğun New York’taki Carnegie Hail konserinde, caz emprezaryosu Norman Granz tarafından dinleyicilere tanıtıldı. 1950’de basçı Ray Brown ve gitarcı Irving Ashby ile birlikte, bu topluluğa bağlı bir üçlü oluşturdu ve 1950’lerde Jazz at the Philharmonic ile birçok turneye katıldı. Üçlünün kadrosu birçok kez değişti. Ashby’nin yerini Barney Kessel, daha sonra da Herb Ellis aldılar. 1950’lerin sonlarında gitarcı Ellis’in ayrılmasıyla, üçlüye davulcu Ed Thigpen katıldı. 1960’ların ortalarında ise Thigpen’in yerini Louis Hayes, Brown’ın yerini de Sam Jones aldı.

Peterson, caz piyanosunun iki büyük öncüsünden, “trompet üslubu” olarak bilinen piyano üslubunun yaratıcısı Earl Hines ile caz piyanosunu kendine özgü üslubuyla geliştiren Art Tatum’dan etkilenmiştir. Swing ve bebop akımlarının etkilerini birleştirerek yepyeni bir çalış tarzı geliştirmiştir. Değişik üsluplarda aynı başarıyı gösterebilen Peterson, enerjik çalış tarzı ve teknik yetkinliği ile caz piyanosunun önde gelen adlarından biri olmuştur.

Peterson, 1950’lerde şarkıcılık da yapmış ve Nat King Cole’a son derece benzeyen sesi ve söyleyiş tarzı ile dikkati çekmiştir.
